Each child will bring a trash-free lunch, snack, cloth napkins, and reusable water bottle to school each day inside a comfortable and sturdy backpack. They will also need sturdy shoes and clothing that is appropriate to the weather including a sun hat on sunny days and a beanie on the colder days. On rainy days children will need insulated rain boots, rain pants and rain coats. Upon enrollment, the teachers will provide detailed gear advice.
Flowersong Outdoor School is open rain or shine. Children wear insulated boots, rain pants and rain coats with layers of warmth underneath so that they stay content and dry all day long, even it they find an enormous puddle to jump in. On rainy days, we visit locations with covered areas where we can eat our meals and do lessons and art, but other than that we will be all outdoors. We are careful to choose safe locations on days where there are high winds to ensure the safety of the children, families and staff!
There is currently no licensing system in California for programs that are run completely outdoors and have no buildings associated with them. Both Bonnie and Elizabeth formerly ran licensed programs from their homes, and Flowersong follows the portions of those licensing guidelines as applicable in this context. Elizabeth and Bonnie have both passed background checks, are CPR and First Aid certified, and are mandated reporters.
We are insured to work as teachers in nature with your children.
There are many opportunities for parents or caregivers to participate! We encourage families to share a holiday, craft, skill or cultural topic with us, and come to celebrate their child's birthday. Families are also invited to monthly 30 minute gatherings during the school day to help create a sense of community, learn more about what we are learning, and participate in fun activities. We also end the year with a class family camping trip.
On a typical day, parents are welcome to stay a few minutes to play a game or read a story to their child, but this is a drop-off program and is not designed for parents to attend with their child daily.
Unfortunately, poor air quality can cause Flowersong Outdoor School to close. When the AQI (air quality index) rises above 100, wearing well fitted KN-95 masks (re-usable preferred) is recommended for children. School will close if the AQI rises over 150. We use Purple Air with the woodsmoke conversion to monitor AQI locally to each site.
Your child's safety is part of our curriculum. We want your child to learn how to stay within the boundaries, follow our school rules, make safe and appropriate choices, learn to problem solve with peers and take care of themselves, the natural world and their classmates. At the same time we also want them to take appropriate risks and challenge themselves. This article can help you better understand the work we are doing at Flowersong.
Weekly newsletters will share location information for each nature outing as well as details about what is happening each week. There is also a calendar that shares in advance where we plan to attend each day. If a location changes for any reason, notification will be sent through our group text, to ensure everyone knows what to expect.
Flowersong Outdoor School is a three days per week program taking place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All students enroll for these three days. There is no 4, 5, 1 or 2 day enrollment. We find this is just enough time to dive deeply into topics and by having everyone attend every day we can move on to new ideas faster and have more consistency and continuity.
There is not a specific "nap time" but children are welcome to rest during our afternoon yoga and mindfulness circle if they are feeling tired. These sessions include breathing techniques, movement activities and relaxation exercises to help children learn to calm themselves and slow down. Each child brings their own yoga mat and carrier bag that is brought home monthly for cleaning.
The day begins at 9:00 and ends at 2:00, including a closing circle with caregivers at 1:50 where the children share a little about what they did during the day. We understand, however, that there are times when you may need to drop off your child late or pick them up early. On these dates, please communicate your plan ahead of time so you'll know where to find us.
In California, enrollment in Kindergarten is optional. Having prepared many children for both Kindergarten and First Grade, Bonnie specializes in this aspect of our program, leading the small group lessons and designing the curriculum so that our older children are ready for what lies ahead. If you want to discuss this with the family of one of Bonnie's past Kindergarten aged students, reach out to us and we'll connect you with a reference. The three day schedule also allows for complimentary homeschool activities in academic areas on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Twice per year parents will come together in the evening on Zoom to learn more about how things are going and to talk about upcoming events, curriculum and plans. Observations of the children will also occur in the late fall and early spring to help inform Flowersong curriculum. Conferences with individual families will occur based on these observations to help give each family individual feedback about how their child is doing and to make plans for ways to enhance and support their learning.
There are many simple self care skills you can help your child master such as learning to put on their own clothes, shoes and coats or wiping themselves when using the bathroom. Purchasing clothing that is easy to dress in as well as lunch containers that are easy to open is another way to help them feel self sufficient.
All enrolled children are expected to be fully immunized per California law, and proof of immunization must be submitted prior to attendance. Requirements can be found here. If your child is on an alternative immunization schedule for medical reasons, a doctor's documented and signed immunization plan must be on record and kept up to date as your child works towards full immunization.
For the 2025-26 school year, monthly program fees are $1,120 ($280 per week). Prorated fees will be determined for the months of June and August.
Upon acceptance into the program, each family will submit a nonrefundable $300 enrollment fee and a $1,120 security fee (4 weeks program fees) to hold the spot for the 2025-26 school year. The security fee will be applied to the child's program fees for their final days of school, or forfeited if the child doesn't attend as agreed.
